After the attack in Sweden there is a proposal to equip all trucks with a anti-theft device
In connection with the latest terrorist attack in Stockholm the Swedish shipping association Sveriges Åkeriföretag has suggested that all transporters should equip their trucks with anti-theft devices. They make it possible to switch off the engine if there is someone other than the driver behind the wheel.
The truck hijackers should be stopped. In case of such an attempt the vehicle has to stop automatically"- says Ulric Lånberg.
He adds that the safety standards which are currently in force in the industry will be carefully analysed and there will be new rules for loading and unloading (the truck in Stockholm was hijacked during unloading in front of the restaurant).
The truck manufacturers will have to figure out how the device will look like by themselves. At this moment it is assumed that the driver must have a remotely operated mechanism that will switch off the engine if the vehicle is too far away from the driver.
The Infrastructure Minister Anna Johansson has already confirmed the willingness to discuss a proposal with companies.
The situation has to be analysed to see whether there is anything that can be done which hasn't been done yet. If there are simple technical solutions that will prevent such situations from happening in the future, then of course we will consider them" - she says.
On Friday, during the unloading, terrorists have hijacked a Spendrups transport company truck and drove it into a crowd of people. 4 people died and 15 were injured.
