According to the survey of the German association BVL, 90% of logistic companies are complaining about the lack of staff
Federal Logistics Association (BVL) conducted a survey among its members on the shortage of employees. Apparently over 90% of them experience the problem of a lack of staff.
BVL conducted a survey among 112 people responsible for staff management in companies that employ in total 40,000 people in all their branches.
According to 91% of the respondents, the lack of staff is a noticeable and even significant issue and 71% of them struggles with it at their own companies. 31% of the respondents admit that some job positions have remained vacant for even a year. 77% of them notice decrease in the number of applications for job positions in the logistics area.
According to the authors of the survey, "the situation is serious and the lack of staff may hinder economic growth." 82% of the respondents assume that in a long term perspective companies will be affected by negative consequences of the labour shortages.
The most needed employees
The most needed employees include IT professionals (47%), drivers (46%), dispatchers (41%) and warehouse workers (38.4% of the respondents).
In terms of the staff education, 24% of the respondents admit that there are shortages of employees with university degrees in their companies. 38% of the respondents emphasised the need to employ a person with technical education, and similarly, 38% of them feel the same about a person with commercial education.
Reasons for the lack of staff in the German logistics industry
Most of the respondents (74.1%) assume that the reason for the lack of staff is general shortage of qualified workforce. Almost a half of them (42.9%) believe that the reasons for that are discouraging salaries and work conditions.
Poland has a particular problem with a shortage of truck drivers
Polish entrepreneurs also struggle with the lack of staff. Mostly there is shortage of drivers, even 100,000 of them are needed (according to the report of the PwC consulting company). The market is trying to deal with the problem, that is why there are initiatives such as Transjobs.eu which is an recrutation platform for owners of transport companies and drivers.
